state cards
As part of my first project at Fathom Information Design, I helped design downloadable state cards for the Barbara Bush Foundation. These cards, developed and created by Jose Luis Garcia del Castillo, Olivia Glennon, and I, were made to better understand how adult literacy spans across the United States and the relationship it has towards health, income, and education.
The United States has not consistently collected data on family and adult literacy. Often, counties with the lowest literacy rates are the same areas that experience poor health, poverty, and low economic mobility.
It was quite a challenge to design a system that would be able to span across all 50 states while still communicating the data efficiently, but after many iterations, I am happy to say these cards are live and you can discover how literacy looks in your state!
